Prenatal care: (before pregnancy care)
Preconception care
Pregnancy often takes us by surprise and may be unplanned but often it is desired. In the event that a pregnancy is planned, it is very important to see an obstetrician prior to falling pregnant. This is known as the Prenatal Consultation. The reasons for this consultation include amongst others ensuring that your health as a prospective mother is optimised as best possible in preparation for the pregnancy. Pre-existing medical conditions can pose an increased burden on mothers and their unborn babies if they are not adequately optimised prior to falling pregnant. Dr Rabothata through consultation with various other specialists, known as a Multidisciplinary Team, will ensure that you are ready for pregnancy.
Antenatal care (Pregnancy care)
It is very important to consult an obstetrician as soon as you find out that you are pregnant(once you miss your periods)
Reasons for this include:
- Obtaining a comprehensive history
- Discussions around social support
- Optimising any existing medical conditions
- Running essential tests necessary in pregnancy
- Ensuring accurate dating for the pregnancy
- Performing ultrasound scans to ensure correct location of the pregnancy
- Commencing necessary supplementation and medication
- Outlining and adressing your expectations and fears regarding the pregnancy
- Prospective method of delivery
- Future pregnancy desires
- Discussing future contraception
- Discussing breastfeeding
Antenatal care is care in pregnancy commencing from onset of pregnancy up until delivery. This will comprise of several scheduled visits to determine and maitain maternal and fetal well-being up until delivery. The antenatal period is divided into 3 trimesters. The dates for your visits will be individualised according to your pregnancy as discussed with Dr Rabothata.
Intrapartum care (Deliveries: Natural birth and Caesarean section)
This is care of pregnancy from the onset of labour until your baby is delivered. The method of delivery may either be vaginal delivery or via caesarean section. The mode of delivery would have been discussed at either your prenatal or antenatal care visit. The mode will be determined by a number of factors. These include amongst others, your previous deliveries, mother and baby’s well-being in labour and also, the mother’s preference. The mode of delivery can rapidly change in the event of emergencies where either the baby or mother’s life may be in danger.
Postnatal care (care after delivery)
Postpartum care is obstetric healthcare from the time of delivery up to 6 weeks thereafter. Services to be discussed at postpartum include maternal and baby well-being, contraception, future pregnancies, breastfeeding, episiotomy care and wound-healing (in the event of a caesarean section). Together with a team of paediatricians, you and your baby will receive the best care.
